Stay Safe and Get the Job Done Right

More than 60 percent of Atmos Energy’s hazardous leaks in 2021 were caused by excavation damage. Even minor damage, such as a scrape, dent, or crease in a pipeline or its coating, can weaken a pipeline and lead to a future leak. Excavation damage can be prevented by contacting 811 at least 3 business days before excavation begins to have buried utility-owned pipelines located and marked. It's free, easy and it's the law.

Whether you are a professional excavator or “do-it-yourselfer,” if your job requires using heavy equipment or power tools, make sure all underground utility lines have been located and marked before digging begins. Natural gas pipelines should be exposed by hand digging inside the state-specific tolerance zone. If unmarked facilities are located, contact 811 again for additional assistance and to have facilities remarked.

Visit the National Excavator Initiative to find state 811 requirements and learn more about how to keep you, your crew and the public safe during the excavation process.

A call to 811 does not mark customer-owned lines or those inside buildings, except in Kansas. To identify those, contact a licensed plumber or qualified contractor.
